What are the differences between electricity contracts?
When choosing an electricity contract, it's worth considering how long you want the electricity price to remain the same. Additionally, you should think about whether you want to take advantage of occasional price reductions on the electricity market. Electricity contracts can be classified into four categories:
A contract for an indefinite period means an agreement in which the price changes either at specified times mentioned in the contract or based on the market price of electricity. Any price changes are always announced at least one month in advance. Furthermore, you can switch to another contract if you wish.
A fixed-term contract refers to an electricity contract where the price remains the same throughout the entire contract period. If you commit to, for example, a 24-month electricity contract, you cannot change it during the contract period. However, if you move to a new home, you can easily continue the fixed-term electricity contract there as well.
An hourly priced electricity contract follows the hourly fluctuations in the electricity market prices. You can save on your electricity bill by utilizing the cheapest moments for electricity usage. For example, you can heat a sauna only when the price is lower. Occasionally, electricity prices can be high, but in long-term comparisons, electricity from the market is often the most cost-effective option. About 10% of Finns choose market-based electricity.
A monthly priced electricity contract provides peace of mind for those who do not want to worry about fluctuations in electricity prices but want to know the exact amount of their monthly bill in advance. The monthly price of the electricity contract includes the same amount of energy every month.
